Ensure your vehicle meets the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) standards without cost! Use a free ULEZ compliance checker to determine if your car is compliant instantly. Avoid fines and contribute to a cleaner environment by checking your ULEZ compliance today!
The ULEZ is a specific area in London where vehicles must meet strict emission standards to drive without incurring a charge.
The London ULEZ initiative was introduced by Transport for London (TfL) to improve air quality by discouraging the use of older, more polluting vehicles in central London. Vehicles entering the ULEZ must meet strict emission standards or pay a daily charge to drive within the zone.
This measure aims to reduce harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter, which contribute to poor air quality and public health issues such as respiratory problems.
The ULEZ operates alongside the existing Congestion Charge zone and covers an area where stricter emission standards are enforced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is part of London's broader efforts to create a cleaner and healthier environment for its residents and visitors.
The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) standards are crucial emission regulations that vehicles must meet to drive within the ULEZ area without incurring a charge. These standards are part of a larger initiative to improve air quality and reduce pollution. The standards are:
Vehicles not meeting these standards must pay a daily charge to drive within the ULEZ. Use the ULEZ checker tool to check your vehicle's compliance.
In the London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), vehicles that meet certain Euro emission standards are exempt from charges. Generally, petrol cars that meet Euro 4 standards (introduced in 2005) and diesel cars that meet Euro 6 standards (introduced in 2015) are eligible for exemption.
Vans and motorbikes are exempt from charges if they meet specific Euro emission standards. For vans, those that comply with Euro 6 standards (introduced in September 2016 for new types of vehicles and September 2017 for all new registrations) are eligible for exemption.
Motorbikes, on the other hand, must meet Euro 3 standards (introduced in 2007) to be exempt from ULEZ charges. Euro 3-compliant motorbikes emit lower levels of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides, reflecting advancements in motorcycle engine design and emission control systems.
By exempting Euro 6 vans and Euro 3 motorbikes from ULEZ charges, Transport for London incentivizes the use of cleaner vehicles and aims to mitigate air pollution in the city centre, enhancing public health and environmental sustainability.
If you fail to pay your Ultra Low Emission Zone penalty charge notice in time, you'll receive a penalty charge notice for your vehicle that does not meet the ULEZ standard.
ULEZ fines can be paid or appealed online .
For your information, the penalty for not meeting the ULEZ standard is £160, but if you pay within 14 days, you'll only be charged £80, saving you half the amount.
The daily charge runs from midnight to midnight, so be sure to pay on the day of travel. Autopay is a good option if you often drive into London. Check TFL's website for more information on how to pay online or via the TFL app.
The ULEZ charge is £12.50 per day for cars, motorcycles, and vans. For heavier vehicles such as lorries and buses, the charge is £100 per day. This charge applies to vehicles that do not meet the required emission standards when driving within the ULEZ area.
Vehicles registered outside the UK must stick to the same regulations or pay a daily fee to drive in the Ultra Low Emission Zone.
For TfL to verify that you are exempt from paying the fee, you must show them evidence that your car satisfies emissions regulations. You can register a car with TFL, but you will have to pay the daily fee until you get confirmation that your evidence of emissions status has been accepted.
During this period, you will be eligible to receive a refund for any previously paid payments. A non-UK vehicle may take up to 10 working days to register with TfL.
If your vehicle was manufactured after September 2015, it is likely Euro 6 compliant and should be able to drive in London's ULEZ without charges. You can confirm this by checking your vehicle's registration details or using our ULEZ check tool with your registration number. If your car meets ULEZ standards, it will also comply with Euro 6 regulations, with some exceptions.
In 2021, only Euro 5-compliant bikes will be allowed on the EU market, so any motorbike you buy will be both Euro 5-compliant and ULEZ-compliant.
If you purchased your bike before this time, please contact the manufacturer. It's important to remember that bikes can still be driven in the ULEZ free of charge if they comply with Euro 3 standards, not Euro 6, as cars must.
